Ever had one of those days?

Posted by Main Blog on Thursday, June 4th, 2009

I ordered some plants and flowers for my garden several weeks back.  I had a check made out to the company from my credit union account.  I then went to the post office to mail it in a Priority Mail envelope with a delivery confirmation so I would know when it arrived at its intended destination.

Two days later I checked to see if it was delivered and it was.  The company tells me they never received the check and this is going on 3 weeks now.  The USPS is investigating.  Meanwhile, my credit union dispersment check is just out there in la-la land.  I don’t know about you, but that always makes me nervous.

After being on the phone with the company, the USPS, and the credit union numerous times over the past few weeks I grew tired of the whole matter.   I called the credit union to stop payment on the check as I planned to just cancel the order.

The credit union informed me that I could indeed do a stop payment, but it would cost me $28 and they would have to reissue another check made out to the same company.  Because I do not have a checking account with the credit union and only a savings, they cannot redeposit the money back into my account.   What the heck?

Well, once again, I will send the check out.  I chose Priority Mail because it is faster than the old Certified Mail where you actually have to have a signer for the letter.  I am wondering if I should just go with FedEx or something else.  I am very aggravated with the whole situation.

Many of the items I had ordered have now sold out.  Grrrr…..

If I did my job like these people, I would not have a job!

Congratulations Tanay Patri from Hickory Valley Christian School

Posted by Main Blog on Thursday, May 28th, 2009

Chattanooga:   Buzzing through the Bee / Fifth-grader Tanay Patri takes spelling honors!

“Bronchospasm” and “quadrivial” are just two examples of the challenging words spellers faced in the 2009 Regional Spelling Bee, which was held at the UTC Fine Arts Building on Saturday afternoon.

Over 80 kids, ranging from 4th grade to 8th, took part in the competition, but, as always, only one winner was left standing.

“My parents have really helped me prepare, and I’m kind of like astonished,” said Tanay Patri, a fifth-grader at Hickory Valley Christian School and the winner of Saturday’s Regional Spelling Bee. “I’m really happy, but I can’t believe it happened to me.”

In round 15, only spellers Mr. Patri and Kendra Benn were left standing. After Miss Benn misspelled her word, Mr. Patri correctly spelled, “Impetigo,” thus winning the title of the 2009 Regional Spelling Bee Champion.

Trophies also went to the competition’s four runners-up.

“For them to have gotten here, this was huge,” said Garry Grimes, head of Newspapers in Education with the Times Free Press. “These kids, they’ll come off stage and say, ‘I knew (the word) had two ‘m’s’ to it,’ or, ‘I knew it has two ‘i’s.’ And you feel sorry for them because they’ve worked so hard. They’ve studied hundreds and thousands of words to have this opportunity.”

According to Mr. Grimes, the competition has drawn winning spellers from 14 counties in North Georgia and Southeast Tennessee.

“Some of the kids are repeats, and they’re the kids that aren’t flustered,” he said. “They get up and they know what to ask. They’re confident because they’ve been here before.”

When faced with a new word, spellers had the option of asking the pronouncer to explain the word’s origin, definition, what part of speech it is and how it’s used in a sentence.

“The kids will have to know fundamental rules (like) phonics and origins,” Mr. Grimes said. “They need to know the language of origin, and that helps them out quite a bit when they know these things.”

Ada Robinson, a retired educator and judge for the competition, said she was very surprised by each participant’s knowledge.

“Some of the words, I probably couldn’t pronounce them myself,” she said.

In a matter of weeks, Mr. Patri’s will be on stage at our nation’s capitol.

“The winner of this gets the word almost,” Mr. Grimes said. “We send them and a parent to Washington, D.C., for the National Spelling Bee, which will be at the end of May. And there they will compete against kids from across the nation and (territories) of the U.S., like Guam and Puerto Rico.”

Kitchen and Bath

Posted by Main Blog on Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

Deciding whether or not to remodel can be a stressful and scary decision. It is easy to stick with the presumption that if it isn’t broken, then it doesn’t need to be fixed, but an ounce of prevention can be worth a lot more than many homeowners realize.

Updating or remodeling your kitchen can add significant value to your home. When is a kitchen ever just a kitchen? This multi-functional room is no longer a center for food preparation; it’s a haven for your family and friends and a means of expressing your personal style. Select a design that truly suits you!

Maybe a vessel sinks is your dream for your bathroom? Whatever style you choose is totally up to you and the look you are trying to achieve. Bathroom remodels also add a lot of value to your home.

Pink-Slip Capitals

Posted by Main Blog on Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

he slowing economy has made such large-scale layoffs common. According to a new report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 3,489 mass layoffs in the first quarter of the year, eliminating 559,000 jobs. These big payroll cuts accounted for more than a fourth of the 2.1 million jobs lost during the period. Some areas of America are feeling the pain of mass firings more than others.

To see who’s been hit hardest, we ranked metropolitan statistical areas by the number of jobs lost through layoffs involving more than 50 employees during the first quarter of 2009. Separation had to be for more than 31 days, so as to exclude temporary furloughs.

Where’s it worst? Detroit, where 57 mass layoffs snuffed out 14,781 jobs in the first quarter of 2009. Much of the pain came from the Big Three carmakers: General Motors, Chrysler and Ford Motor. The area has the highest unemployment rate in the country at 14%.

Chicago runs a close second with 13,647 jobs erased in mass firings. Construction-heavy Los Angeles, also hurt by the Golden State’s financial crisis, wiped out 10,594. Finance-focused New York lost 8,688 during the first quarter of 2009. Houston also made the list with 7,184 job losses; Dallas had 4,784.

Larger cities were bound to get singled out: They attract big corporations with big payrolls that require big cuts to make meaningful differences to their bottom lines. At the state level, California had the most mass layoffs with 115,014 workers let go, followed by Michigan with 46,817, Illinois with 41,887 and Texas with a more modest 33,005.

Mass layoffs put even more strain on a city’s economy than gradual job cuts. Local governments have to quickly find a way to help newly unemployed workers. “You really don’t want to get hit with mass layoffs because you now have a large number of people who need resources and it really tends to overwhelm the public sector,” said Joel Naroff, an economist at Naroff Advisers.
