Unfair Bosses — Grrrrrr

Posted by Main Blog on Saturday, November 22nd, 2008

Why is it when a person or people work third shift that the boss always craps all over them? Just because I work third shift does not mean I do not have a life.  Just because I work third shift doesn’t mean I do not enjoy the holidays.  I am so fed up with my work situation.

I am thankful I have a job, don’t get me wrong.  I would just like to be treated considerately or on the same level as day shift around here.  It never ceases to amaze me at the stuff my day shift department gets away with.  It is infuriating.

They get all the time off they want when they want it without any complaints from the boss.  In fact, they are so well padded several can be off at the same time even though we have a very small department with less than 10 people.

We all work 12 hour shifts 3-4 days per week.  So, day shift is 7a-7p and third is 7p-7a.  It is rare that I ever get relieved on time.  In fact, it is rare that any of the day shift people get to work on time at all.

Third shift (there is two of us that work opposite each other) is always on time.   We also have to work 3 nights one week and 4 nights the next week which really stinks.  Day shift rarely works 3 days per week.

What’s more, all other departments have made cutbacks in staffing due to the economic problems except my department.  On most days they have a supervisor (nonworking), 3 techs, and an assistant.  As a rule, day shift does less patients than third shift does.  Most of the time 5 or more day shift workers are sitting, playing on the computer, reading or talking on the phone most of the day.  They do not go home early when it is slow.  They make no cutbacks whatsoever.

On third shift, there is an assistant until 10pm and myself or the other third shift worker and that is all.  We usually do more patients than 5 people on days.  We do it all.

So, why am I on my soapbox? Well, the supervisor FINALLY put out the schedule which runs from Sunday, November 23 through December 20.  I didn’t even know what my schedule was for THANKSGIVING until today.  How is anyone supposed to make plans?Let me say, I am not happy either.  My kids are so disappointed that I will not be able to cook or go anywhere with them and my husband for Thanksgiving.

Well, that is not a problem for day shift.  The supervisor got a PRN person to cover for them so none of them have to work Thanksgiving day.  Not only do I have to work my normal night, I was given an extra night to work.  I am working 4 nights straight through Thanksgiving.  So much for Thanksgiving dinner or visiting with family.  I will be sleeping.

No one on day shift is working more than two days next week if that.  Why not help a third shift person out with a PRN person? Because, that would be considerate.  We cannot have that in this department.

Again, our schedule which was just posted today does not run through Christmas.  So, that means that I will not have a clue as to what I am working until December 20.  Isn’t that nice? I will probably get stuck with Christmas Eve and Christmas night.

I am more than ready for a new supervisor, one who treats us all equally.  They just demoted the director of our small facility and brought in someone new who has already began cutting managers.

Our department is talked about all over the hospital because of all the day shift workers who sit around and do nothing all day.  It is embarassing to come in and hear about how they sit.  Day shift hates to have to pull a third shift when one of us is off because they have to work their rear ends off.  Maybe justice will be served at some point although I am beginning to wonder.

The bright spot is that on December 26, my family and I fly out of here to visit Disney World for a few days.  Thank heavens.  I was told on one occasion to make sure I did not ask off for more than 7 days anymore because it made scheduling difficult.  Isn’t that sad? I am entitled to time off just like day shift.  He can just get over it.  I made sure that my time this time did not consist of more than 7 working days…but…lol…it runs over nearly a 3 week period! LOL…but hey, I didn’t take off more than 7 working days.
